Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

When/How did u drop to one nap?

There were 3 days this past week that I couldn't get LO to take his afternoon nap. I think he might be ready to transition to just one nap. So I've started pushing his morning nap later, to 3 hours after he wakes instead of 2. Is that a good place to start? How old was your little one when they dropped to one nap, and how did you go about adjusting the schedule?

  • My son was 12 months and we are working on DD switching now at 14/15 months old.  We pretty much do what you are doing and drop one nap and move the other to a more middle time.  It is a little rough but didn't take too long with switching.

  • If you have the freedom to, following LOs cues is the easist way. DS at 12 months asked for his morning lap later and stopped taking the afternoon nap. He regressed when we moved and started needing the second nap again, but he's starting to phase it out the same way.

If you want to do it all at once, pushing back the first nap is a good way to start. LO may still take the second nap for a little while, but it shouldn't be long.

  • He was around a year old when we made the transition. It mostly happened out of necessity. We were pretty busy during the week, and had morning activities that lasted until 11:00 or noon. On those days, we'd push through and just do an afternoon nap. He gradually got used to that, and I just started making that the norm. If we stay home, he'll nap earlier (10:30 or 11:00), but he can wait longer to go down without issues.

  • LO did it on her own. She just started skipping the afternoon nap and her morning nap moved a little later and got longer.

  • We switched around 14/15 months.  DD just kind of did it on her own as she didn't need to go down for her morning nap.  Her afternoon naps was usually around 2 and we moved it up to 1.  Now she consistently goes down at 1:30 for nap time as her body has figured out its new schedule and needs.
  • I am starting to wonder about this, too.  My baby was 2.5 weeks late, so developmentally almost 1 year old.  His morning nap is about 3.5-4 hours after he wakes up and lasts 1.5 hours.  Sometimes he takes the afternoon nap, sometimes he skips it.  He is pretty tired by bedtime on days he skips it, but he is still in a pretty good mood, making me think he could handle it if we dropped to 1 nap.

But he is not walking yet - close, but not yet.  And I read that sometimes around this age babies seem like they are ready to drop to 1 nap but then they start walking and they get more tired and need the 2 naps.  So I am trying to wait it out until he starts walking to see if that has any impact.  I actually have no idea what I am doing :)

We also just went with what DD was naturally doing.  She started taking her first nap later and later, and it was getting difficult to squeeze two naps in in one day.  She finally just started taking her nap later in the day and sleeping longer, and that was that!  She started this between 16 and 17 months I think.

  • LO's new daycare only has one nap for toddlers, so we switched out of necessity. She usually takes a short ten minute nap on the drive home but I don't really count that as a second nap. On weekends, she often takes a morning nap of about one hour in addition to her afternoon nap, so I know she's not really ready to drop the second nap yet. That said, she seems to be doing okay with weekend naps being different from weekday naps.
